There are many different breeds involved in the dog sport of herding. Several were represented at Brigand’s Hideout Herding Camp in March. The clinician, Larry Painter, as had much experience with all breeds. I am always fascinated with all of the different styles and techniques used! Dogs never cease to surprise me and I feel so lucky to be able to photograph some of those experiences! In this blog, I am focussing on Australian Cattle Dogs or ACDs. My family had some of these, but where I grew up, they were called Dingos. But this breed is actually far evolved from the wild Dingos of Australia.
First for some portrait style dog photographs. I love grabbing shots of the dogs as they are standing around waiting for their turns. They are often quite focussed on watching the other dogs work.

Keep in mind that this is training. Most of these dogs are just beginning their herding careers or came to work on specific issues that they have been struggling with.

I always love to capture that connection between a dog and it’s person! Without that, very little is going to get accomplished in the herding world!
