For years, we have had a very large herd of Elk living in our area.  I always feel such excitement when I get to see them!  Unfortunately, it never seems like the perfect photographic moment, due to the light, no camera, a car full of dogs, or no time.  But when I came out of my driveway yesterday and saw this magnificent herd, I decided to “just be late!”  I blasted back down the drive and grabbed my camera, but by the time I got back to the top, they were already restless. I truly tried to creep into my stealth mode, but they were having none of it.  The young bull took his leader position very seriously!  They were pretty far off, which was making me wish for one of those huge lenses that I could not possibly hand hold, but then by the time I could have organized it, they would have been long gone! From what I can count, there are 40+ members.

They had finally had enough of me and my camera and decided to head for the hills!

I was very excited when I saw this shot on my computer screen! At this point, they were really far away and moving pretty quickly. Until I magnified the shot, I did not realize that it was the young bull, keeping an eye on me, until he new that his charges were a safe distance away. I have always known that Elk can be very damaging to fences and that they think nothing about just going through them, but this was a very polite group and they patiently waited their turns and hopped over the fence and were gone into the day!!!

…..once again, Photographer wishing for a biggggg 400mm lens to capture the moment!
